Assignment 1 - Knowledge Elicitation
- Due Mar 3, 2023 by 11:59pm
- Points 0
For this assignment your will get some practice thinking through the process of Knowledge Elicitation to uncover details of student thinking in both a (1) procedural task domain i.e geometry problem-solving, and a (2) conceptual task domain i.e water cycle. This year we are trying something new by having these tasks implemented as an Open Learning Initiative (OLI) module, which can provide immediate feedback and hints while you work through exercises.
Goals of the module:
- Identify the knowledge, strategies, and skills that students need to solve problems
- Identify the misconceptions or shallow knowledge that may interfere with learning
- Identify any “hidden skills” that may make problems easier than expected
- Identify the kinds of errors that novices typically make.
- Explain how findings from a given knowledge elicitation can inform design decisions
You are asked to start with the model of correct performance in the given task domain, and then to analyze protocols of novice problem solving with participants from the target population (we have given you collected protocols for the purpose of this assignment but for the course project you will have to do knowledge elicitation with your target audience), and compare the results of this analysis to your model of correct performance.
Deliverable
You will see a section named "OLI Torus" in the course navigation on the left-hand side. For this assignment we ask you to finish the 2 units listed there, which will count for the grade on this Assignment.
Please make your way through all content (including all questions) on each page. You have unlimited attempts at the problems in this assignment - so, if you don't get it the first time, try again! We will accept attempts up until the Friday before Spring Break (March 3), which is the listed due date of this assignment.
Each page is structured in form of a quiz with:
Multiple-choice questions - These questions are automatically graded and immediate feedback is provided to you after each attempt, you can do as many attempts as you want to ensure that you get all of them correct.
Open-ended questions - These questions are instructor graded and you will receive feedback after the deadline, you can do as many attempts as you want if you want to change your answer but ONLY your last response will be graded for this assignment.
