[OPTIONAL] Session 15 RWPs - Pre-Production

  • Due Mar 12, 2024 by 12:01pm
  • Points 1
  • Submitting a discussion post

As we move into Act 3 of the course I would rather you devote your energy to doing design than trying to get a bunch of reading in. I still provide RWPs in case that people find it useful to hear the perspectives of others but making posts about them will be OPTIONAL from here on out. If you make a post you will get credit, if you don't you will be excused. In the past some people have used this as an opportunity to shore up earlier missed posts but really the goal is providing information.

Strongly Recommended RWPs

As we move into the Final Project Phase there are a few pieces of the Playful Production Process that may be helpful in understanding the Requirements for the Final Project. In particular I would recommend:

  1. Chapter 6 - Communication as a Game Design Skill Links to an external site.
    1. Some helpful tips on team communication
  2. Chapter 10 - What is a Vertical Slice? Links to an external site.
    1. A Vertical Slice is a useful concept in production and what you will likely be aiming for if you plan on making a digital game for your final project.
  3. Chapter 11 - Building a Vertical Slice Links to an external site.
    1. A lot of nice production tips (again most relevant to making digital games)
  4. Chapter 17 - Preproduction Deliverable - The Game Design Macro Links to an external site.
    1. As part of the final project you will be asked to produce a Game Design Macro that succinctly describes your game concept. The exact requirements we will use are slightly different from what's described here (they don't talk about learning goals for one thing), but there is a lot of useful ideas in terms of design documentation.

Reading Prompt

If you want to make a post (or find it helpful to have a prompt for reading):

  1. From the various tips in these resources what are 3 ideas you will keep in mind through the Final Project Process
